The Real Story Behind Goth Fashion

by Sydney Jaclyn

Black is certainly one of the main staples of Goth fashion, and has been for a number of years. However, black is such a versatile color, and it takes more than putting on a black outfit to call yourself a Goth. True, the Goth subculture itself isn't really about fashion. However, you tell the world something about yourself by the way you dress.

What is the purpose of dressing like a Goth? To express yourself. Black is a good place to start, but many Goths add varying shades of gray and even white to their outfits.

As a matter of fact, we're starting to see downright rich colors in Goth outfits: Hot pink, deep red, sapphire blue. But still, one thing remains consistent: Black is the primary color.

Accessorizing is very important to dressing in the Goth style. Lots of jewelry, and often piercings, are a hallmark of the style. Jewelry is usually dramatic or chunky, and in silver or pewter.

Religious symbols are popular as pendants, as they can be an important part of who someone is. Patterned tights are not unusual, nor are gloves and sleeves (arm warmers). Tights that are striped or fishnet are another way to inject color into Goth fashion.

It's not hard at all to find clothes that you can incorporate into your Goth style. Try starting at your local thrift store. You can find lots of stuff there for cheap that you can alter!cut it, dye it, or add studs to make it truly yours.

But of course, since many people are keenly interested in the Goth look, a lot of companies have caught on and are supplying stores with lots of Goth-style clothing. Make the outfit your own with accessories and jewelry.

This is only one way of thousands to dress in the Goth fashion. Because it's all about individuality, you will find that no two Goths dress alike.
