Behind the Scenes Goth Style

by Sydney Jaclyn

How do you define the Goth style? First and most importantly, it's about freely expressing your individuality. The Goth lifestyle is most popular among teens, but it is not uncommon for people in their twenties or even older to adopt it as well. The three main aspects of this style are clothing and accessories, hair, and make-up.

The most common aspect of clothing associated with Goth fashion is the use of all- or mostly-black outfits, usually combined with distinct accessories, such as fishnet or velvet tights and heavy pewter jewelry. Although black is still the most commonly used clothing color among Goths, dark or bright jewel tones are being used more often to contribute to the feel of punk rock, the subculture from with the Goth style originated.

Another important part of the Goth style is hair. Hair has a lot of potential here. It is the one part of the body that's the easiest to style into an endless variety of different looks. Goths tend to dye their hair and/or wear wigs.

Colors range from black to pink and everything in between, but usually are limited to one flat color, or one color with highly contrasting, chunky highlights. When it comes to Goth hair, "subtle" is a word that does not apply. As for hair styles, they include partially shaved heads, Mohawks, angled cuts, bobs, and long, blunt cuts. These hair styles are worn by everyone from men, women, boys, and girls.

Goth style make-up also includes a lot of black. Look into a Goth make up kit and you will probably find dark mascara, black liquid eye liner, and even black lipstick in there. Both women and men wear make-up to enhance their unique style. A white foundation or cheek color is often used to create contrast, and some Goths will add some color in the form of dark red lipstick or colored false lashes.
